It's so impressive how good quality a picture from 1894 actually is. If you got everyone to stand still to have perfect exposure/no blur, you probably couldn't tell it's an old photo without context.

Antinous was the boy toy lover of the roman emperor hadrian. When antinous was killed hadrian was so distraught that he spread artwork of the boy throughout the empire, deified him and created a cult to his worship, and even named at least one town after him. It was all quite scandalous.

The statue was discovered by a team of French archaeologists who in 1891 were granted permission by the Greek government to excavate at Delphi. Most of the workers were locals from the village of Kastri which, before it was relocated, was built almost on top of the ancient religious site.

Today the statue is on display at the Archaeological Museum of Delphi.
