My pop was an engineer at Grumman during the Apollo 11 mission. He always wondered how Collins must have felt, not being able to walk on the moon. He said he was the most important guy though.
That feat also made him the most isolated human in the history of mankind. He was a full moon diameter from the next closest living being - and while on the far side of the moon had no line of sight (or radio transmission) to anyone else, either.
I once heard someone lamenting Michael Collins's comparative lack of fame thusly: "Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin are two of the most famous people of the 20th century. Michael Collins isn't even the most famous Michael Collins."
That photo he took of the LEM and the Earth that I've seen captioned "Michael Collins is the only human, alive or dead, not in this photo" is haunting.
