My dad did almost this exact same thing to me the night after I came home from a trip one time except I was upstairs sleeping. He didn't even check, he just assumed I never came home because I was kidnapped at the airport or something.
Edit: I should mention that I was also in my early twenties
My dad called me at 5am once and bitched me out for not being home yet, and I was like, “I’m in my bed and you woke me up.” He then walked into my room, still on the phone and said, “oh. Well, I didn’t see your car in the driveway.”

I once woke up to like 10 missed calls, some voicemails, and a stream of texts from my mom from throughout the night.
I was literally sleeping in my room the whole time. She said she checked but didn't see me sleeping in my bed (I was under the covers).
