The photos. The ash cloud would have been traveling at around 70mph and accelerating down the mountain. His chances of survival were basically nil.

Also I plagiarized this comment that I found looking for the photos. It should be obvious Robert Landsburg didn't take the photo in OP's image, unless he snapped that one en route to heaven's gates. Landsburg's photos aren't so perfect, but they're freaking intense. They feel like a found footage story, almost stressful to look at compared to that perfect aerial shot - especially knowing his story and putting your perspective in his shoes on the ground.

Math problem. If the ash cloud moved at 70mph and he was 3 miles away, how long did it take the ash cloud to reach him?
