It's (mostly) true that europeans started the wars, but they were called the world wars because they affected the whole world. Like, they weren't called that by white people out of pride when they started, the names were given afterwards when people realised the scale of what had happened; people from every continent died because of the european empires.
It might be that they're badly educated, ww2 coverage tends to focus a lot on Europe and a little on the war against Japan. Nothing about how much Japan had conquered in the pacific, almost nothing about what the soviets were doing. I found out about Brazils involvement just four years ago!
