Devaluing black lives and contributions isn’t anything new unfortunately. Want it to stop? Submit complaints to the local media and legislature and make suggestions for a more inclusive and respectful community
In high school I wrote for the school newspaper. One week we were asked by the principal's office to write a story promoting an upcoming school festival and were provided pictures by the office to include for it.
We wrote the story and didn't think much of it until we got a call from a mother of an African-American student who claimed her son was cropped out of one of the photos we'd used for the story on the front page. We assured her that we at the paper had not cropped the image and that it could be a similar photo taken that simply didn't include her son but that we'd inquire with the front office about it.
So we went to the principal and explained the situation about the phone call. He kinda squirmed in his seat and said that the photo may have been altered before he gave it to us. Naturally we were peeved that this shit was even happening but we were kind of in disbelief that he'd set up a situation like this with a bunch of 14-17 year olds as a buffer between any kickback and himself.
We contacted the mother and explained the situation and apologized to her. She was cool and said we were off the hook but that she would definitely take this issue up with the faculty. We issued a clarification and apology in the next issue and we didn't really hear about it again, but I still think about it a lot.
