‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ Comes To The Criterion Collection In April

Perhaps the best part about The Criterion Collection is the way that the library can house such unique and eclectic films, while still keeping the reputation of releasing the very best that cinema has to offer. And for the month of April, that continues, as the recent Criterion announcement contains a perfect cross-section of titles that shows just how much variety exists in the catalog.

Leading the class of April 2020 is the most recent live-action film from acclaimed filmmaker Wes Anderson, “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” One of the best films of the last decade is finally coming to Criterion and the special edition release is chock full of brand-new extras. There’s a new audio commentary featuring Anderson, filmmaker Roman Coppola, and actor Jeff Goldblum, as well as new interviews with the cast and crew and a brand-new doc about the making of the film. So, fans of Anderson will have to make sure to snag a copy this spring.

Joining Anderson in the April class is Miranda July and her acclaimed film “Me And You And Everyone You Know.” Much like “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” July’s film is coming to Criterion with amazing picture and sound (a given), but also plenty of new special features. There are two new documentaries on the disc featuring one focused on July’s Artangel project and the other on the filmmaker’s beginnings and what led her to direct her debut feature.

But don’t think that April is just bringing quirky films to Criterion. Joining the aforementioned films are the Juraj Herz film, “The Cremator,” Jean-Pierre Melville’s “Army of Shadows,” and George Marshall’s Western “Destry Rides Again.” These five films, once again, run the gamut of genre and tone, showing that Criterion has a little something for every cinephile.
