CNN is catching heat from viewers for their questioning of Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) at the Democratic debate Tuesday night. Just a day earlier, it was reported that Sanders had told fellow presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Ma.) in 2018 that a woman could not win the election, something Sanders has vehemently denied. But despite Sanders’s repeated denials, CNN moderator Abby Phillip went ahead with a line of questioning that made it sound as if there was no doubt Sanders had in fact said it.

“Sen. Sanders, CNN reported yesterday that, and Sen. Warren confirmed in a statement, that in 2018 you told her that you did not believe that a woman could win the election,” Phillip said. Then asked, “Why did you say that?” “Well, as a matter of fact, I didn’t say it,” Sanders responded.

Sanders went on to say that he’s been saying for decades that a woman could be president, citing a YouTube video shot in 1988 proving as much. He also mentioned that in 2015 he encouraged Warren to run in the 2016 election, and only ran himself when she declined. But still, Phillip pressed on in the same manner.

“So Sen. Sanders, I do want to be clear here,” Phillip said, “you’re saying that you never told Sen. Warren that a woman could not win the election.” “That is correct,” Sanders replied. Phillip then immediately turned to Warren and asked, “Sen. Warren, what did you think when Sen. Sanders told you a woman could not win the election?”

This garnered groans and laughter from the audience. Viewers at home also took notice and #CNNisTrash quickly started trending on Twitter.

CNN is absolute trash. Framing every question as Bernie is a horrible person. Literally the worst debate ever, please end this. #DemDebate #CNNisTrash — Dy🌹💪🏿 (@DynastyClaire) January 15, 2020

Viewers weren’t the only ones to notice the clear bias in the way the questions were asked. The Late Show With Stephen Colbert aired live after the debate where Colbert had a question of his own.

“Who wrote these questions, Andy Cohen?” Colbert asked. He then continued as Cohen hosting a Real Housewives reunion, “Sen. Warren, I will give you an opportunity now to throw wine in Bernie’s face and snatch this b***h’s wig off, ok?”

Ignoring the warren stuff, Wolf Blitzer basically asked Bernie why he agrees with the Ayatollah on the debate stage. Do you think in a million years that Biden or any of the other candidates would have gotten such a smear filled question like that.

They may as well have asked "senator Sanders, when did you stop beating your wife?"
