If we're not animals, what are we? Plants?

My mom pulled me and all my siblings out of public school because my 5th grade teacher gave an accurate lesson on Christopher Columbus. My mom came into my classroom all hotheaded. She opened up my outdated textbook and pointed to the sentence that said "Some believe Christopher Columbus was led by God to the new land." My mom proceeded to berate my teacher for teaching "falsehoods" and "blasphemy" to her child.

She was probably the best teacher I had. My mom hated her. My mom then "taught" us in home school. Those were the worst 4 years of my life. I learned nothing from my mom, who was absent, even as a stay at home mom.

It's insane how it only takes ONE thing to set a crazy parent off the rails...

Edit: it was 5th grade that I learned about Columbus. I had the teacher for 4th grade as well.

My teacher specifically taught us that diseases were brought to the native people. I'm not sure now if she taught about the occurence of rape, or if that's something I learned later. I do know that she taught us about treating others with kindness. That sometimes in history, people weren't nice to each other. But we could make a difference by being understanding and open minded about people and ideas that we don't yet understand.

Edit 2: After a commenter suggested it, I have reached out on facebook to the teacher. It was surprisingly easy to find her without knowing her first name! If y'all are interested I can keep you updated on that exchange. Who knows if she even remembers me.
