Apparently the employee had moved out of state after offering to donate, but the recipient had someone else lined up. When that fell through she offered to hire the woman back if she moved back to new York. The employee did move back, donated the kidney(NOT to the boss, because she was a poor match, but it led to a chain of donations that ended with the boss receiving a kidney) , and came back to work after a month, but with complications from the surgery. The workplace became hostile when she tried to take sick days and was subsequently fired for "performance issues ".
Edit: I received some criticism that I was twisting the truth about what happened (I'm a "lying right winger" which is news to me), if I did it's not intentional and if theres anything I need to edit to make this more accurate I'd be happy to.
A bit of an update: The New York State Division on Human Rights ruled that she was unjustly fired and there was a subsequent lawsuit but I dont know the outcome of it. This was all years ago.
