I know a little bit of that feeling. Years ago now, my dad suddenly got very ill. He got sepsis, and his oxygen level was low. He was in a coma for a bit, and it took a month before he could come home after that. His personality changed, and he went from vibrant, loud and boisterous, to void of personality, quiet, and unopinionated.

My dad used to sing. All the time. He'd get the words wrong, and completely butcher the tune, but he sang when he was happy. He stopped singing after he got sick.

Almost exactly a year later, I was putting up the Christmas tree at my parent's house. I had just put all the lights on it, and turned them on. My dad had been sitting on the couch, silently, just watching. Suddenly, he sang the words, "it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas". That sound made me so happy. It really was Christmas time after that.

My mom just died after a long battle with dementia. Towards the end, the only person that could make her smile, was my dad. She hadn't remembered his name in over a year, but she knew he loved her. They were married almost 40 yrs.

Same here. My grandfather hadn’t said a word in quite some time. On a Thanksgiving I was helping my mom put him in the truck and I kissed his forehead and told him goodbye. His last words to me were “bye mijo”. I will carry that with me forever.
