Just because your art isn't the most famous or profitable doesn't mean it's worthless. That's the joke. Any art that's that famous isn't going to be good because it's just rich people avoiding taxes or trying to prove their status. There are plenty of real people who like real art.

Doesn't statements like this defeat the argument that this artwork is bad? I mean you may not like the art, but it's quite successful, right? Everyone seems to be talking about it, taking pictures of it and discussing its value and meaning? But I promise if you saw anything similar to what he dropped on the floor there in a gallery you would be less inclined to give it any attention at all.

If people regularly taped bananas to walls then it wouldn't be as valuable.

I don't like the banana art. It doesn't speak to me. But pretty much every basic art student and her mother has done sketches of people. Nobody else did the banana thing. So your portfolio of student projects that look identical to a hundred thousand other students this year just don't bring that much to the table.

If they bring you joy, that should be enough. If you love art, then you should take pride in your work whether or not it's unique or valuable to other people. It's valuable to you.

So, why do you even bother? If you don't do your art for yourself, and you haven't found an audience who uniquely appreciates your art, why do you even bother? It's a valid question as much as it is a frustrated exasperation, and it deserves some introspection.
