US expat in Switzerland here. I had to go to an emergency ocular clinic without a doctors referral ( it was, in fact, an emergency). The receptionist was APPALLED, apologetic and embarrassed asking for $500 upfront for the visit, as it is a private clinic at the public hospital. After being seen by a nurse, a doctor and a more senior specialist, patched up and released with meds, I was sent home, assuming I would get a further bill for the balance due. A week later, I get a letter asking for my bank details for them to return $284 to me that wasn’t used in the visit.
People literally don’t believe me when I describe the US insurance that my family carries.

I was a professor at a State College in New York. My wife was a staff member at a rich private college. We had two health insurance policies.
Thanks to complications with our daughters second birth they had to move the delivery to another hospital at the last minute.
It was an "out of network hospital" but we needed to not have my daughter die. Final bills were over $100,000.

For anyone in here who is watching this awestruck (you're either not US, or you're too young to pay for medical bills) this video misses the most obnoxious part of it.
It isn't like "Having a baby" is $10,000. It's that you have no fucking idea how much it's going to cost. You can look up averages, but you do not know how much the hospital is going to charge until your health insurance has been charged by your hospital, and you've had multiple lengthy conversations with your health insurance company.
It's bullshit.
It would be at least a little more reasonable with those prices if you knew what they were going into it.
