My ID son loved Santa but was too anxious to get too close. So we would ask Santa to wave to him - every one waved and called out "Hello, Sonsname! Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas!" My son would be happy for days.
Most "Santas" are just the best kind of people! Our chorale group has an older gentleman who has white hair & beard, and even does the "ho ho ho!" parts when required.
One after concert dinner at a restaurant, a small boy comes up & asks is he Santa? Friend says no, but he knows Santa very well & will send him a message that the boy said hello so politely!

Mall Santas are amazing people a lot of the time. There is actually a school for mall santas to get certified
