Please have your cat microchipped. I volunteer at a cat shelter and none of the cats that are found have it so we rarely can find their owners (even if we look for them of social medias).

It's sad because we know that some of them have owners. They are clean, don't look too malnourished and are friendly. Some of them are even sterilized and a few are (sadly) declawed.

My friend was just recently reunited with her cat after 2 months. He got out of the car halfway through her moving trip down the east coast and disappeared, and she had a deadline so she couldn’t keep hunting for him. When she arrived at her new home, she found her microchip account had expired—you have to pay to keep your info active, I guess. She thought he was gone forever. Two months later, she gets a call from a lady who tracked her down via the microchip—she’d found her (now very skinny) cat. They were reunited and he’s happy and getting back to a healthy weight again. TL;DR: get your pet microchipped even if you can’t keep paying for it. It can still help you locate your lost pet.
