This is close to the Dunning-Kruger effect. People with very basic knowledge on a subject often overestimate their understanding on the topic as a whole. As one gains more knowledge and understanding on a given topic it often reveals to them just how little they actually know about it and lowering their confidence in that subject. You start to know what you don’t know. There is a steep drop in the confidence curve once you start to scratch the surface level understanding and it slowly builds back over time as you develop your understanding, but never reaching that blissful ignorance you began with.
