George Conway Joins Others in Calling for Michael Bloomberg to Buy Fox News

Michael Bloomberg has not yet officially announced a bid for the 2020 presidency, but that hasn't stopped some people from suggesting ways for the former New York City mayor to defeat President Donald Trump if he does launch a campaign.

George Conway, along with several other Twitter commenters, claimed a potential acquisition of Fox News would make a huge impact in the upcoming election, and billionaire Bloomberg was just the person capable of taking over the news network.

In a tweet on Friday, Tom Wright, a senior fellow at The Brookings Institute, suggested Bloomberg, who already owns the Bloomberg News empire, should buy the right-leaning Fox News, which has been notoriously loose with fact-checking and criticism of Trump. "Mike Bloomberg's first major campaign move should be to buy Fox News," Wright wrote.

Conway, a lawyer and the husband of Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway, agreed a potential Bloomberg acquisition of Fox News could be a great benefit to the U.S. "Seriously, that would be the greatest thing that he could do for the country," Conway tweeted on Friday.

As it stands, Fox News, which is a key part of the Fox Corporation, is not currently for sale. The news network separated from 21st Century Fox following the Walt Disney Company's $71.3 billion merger with the media conglomerate in March, taking control of most of Fox's entertainment entities. Fox Corporation now operates as a standalone media company with ownership of its broadcast network, and owned-and-operated network affiliates like the Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network and Fox Sports.

Bloomberg shook up the Democratic presidential field after filing paperwork to enter the 2020 presidential primary in Alabama on Friday. The state holds the first submissions deadline, meaning had Bloomberg not submitted the documents within the regulated timeframe, his name wouldn't be on the ballot for the Alabama primary.

His decision to wait last minute and file on the day of the deadline—not to mention skipping campaigning in traditional early-state contests in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina—may be indicative of the 77-year-old's potentially unconventional campaign style.

Although he has not made a final decision on his participation in the election, Bloomberg's primary paperwork filing in Alabama was enough to get a rise out of Trump. Speaking to the press on Friday, Trump welcomed a race against the former mayor. "If he did [run], I'd be happy. There is nobody I'd rather run against than 'Little Michael,' that I can tell you," Trump said.

"I've known Michael Bloomberg for a long time," he continued. "You go back early on, he said a lot of great things about Trump. But I know Michael. He became just a nothing. He was really a nothing. He's not going to do well, but I think he's going to hurt Biden, actually. But he doesn't have the magic to do well. Little Michael will fail."

Bloomberg has hinted at running for president in the past and even considered joining the race in 2008 and 2016.
