What I find quite interesting is that for 30,000 people the data isn't smoother. I know watching a half marathon recently in my city people certainly seem to come in waves. Obviously there are then the benchmark times, but even ignoring those I'd expect a smoother distribution if everyone was simply running as fast as they could in isolation.

Can Boston Marathon really be regarded "a typical marathon"? It has pretty strict qualifying standards for amateur runners' standards.

This guy's last (26th) mile smokes my first mile. I don't care if he had all the advantages one can have, that blows my mind.
