I had to cover an ESL class for a period. The students had to read out loud a short story. They were all embarrassed by their bad English.
I told them to give me a short story in Spanish (what a majority of them spoke) and I read it out loud as best I could. They laughed as I butchered Spanish beyond recognition.
Told them they are learning a literal valuable skill of being bilingual and many businesses find that highly attractive for hiring. If I was bilingual I could work at a Spanish immersion school and make an easy extra $10k.
If anyone wants to hear the parent reading or see a news segment with the teacher, here is a link It seems that the parent did stop to explain the story for comprehension and she can speak some English, just not read it (or at least not well enough for a presentation)
