I was a kid when it erupted. I can’t remember if it was Post or Kellogg cereal, but if you mailed in a certain number of box tops, they mailed you a vial of Helen’s volcanic ash. Or so they told us that’s what it was anyhow.
Looks like Spirit lake. Fun fact: The debris avalanche deposited about 430,000,000 cubic metres (350,000Â acreâ‹…ft) of pyrolized trees, other plant material, volcanic ash, and volcanic debris of various origins into Spirit Lake. It's surface is now a couple hundred feet higher than before.
The debris took out it's normal outlet so the army corps of engineers drilled a new outlet tunnel through a mountain to keep the lake from flooding the valley. Half of the lake still has floating dead trees covering it.
Edit: Thank you for the silver! If anyone gets the opportunity to go to Mt St Helens I highly recommend it! There is a lot of very interesting stuff along the way to the windy ridge viewpoint, including spirit lake and the miner's car.
