Philippines is one of the most deforested areas among other counties around the globe. The total forest area of the Philippines has decreased from 70 % to 20% in few years which has led to many problems such as floods and landslides.

The Philippine law parliament is now concerned about its environment has decided to pass a law that states that students in order to graduate have to plant more than 10 trees while in college.

According to this law, every student before graduating has to plant more than 10 trees this will increase about 525 billion trees in a generation. Statistically almost 500,000 students graduate per year hence planting trees will lead to about 172 million trees per year which will eventually lead 525 billion new trees in a generation.

The law has been passed by the Legislative Council and has been proposed in front of the President to be signed and passed and legally applicable to every University in the Philippines. It is an innovative idea to contribute towards a greener society and also help students to contribute towards the health of the planet.

Different species of plants are supposed to be planted. The plants are supposed to be according to the climatic conditions in that country. The trees are supposed to be planted at different locations such as residential areas, mining areas, military field, schools hospitals Universities and other areas whenever it is possible. With the increasing carbon in the air of the country this law particularly has become necessary and will ensure the decrease of carbon dioxide in the air.

Im a college graduate from PH. And also a member of the student council for 4 years and i shit you not, i have lost count of how many tree planting activities we have to organize. we always have 6-7 tree planting activities minimum every year. 10 trees per graduate is just basically nothing compared to what most students do.

Edit. Thanks for the plat.

Very important edit : we not are planting trees for the good of all mankind or to save planet earth. Philippines has a massive problem regarding soil erosion. Most of our cities are being threatened on two fronts, Our mountains are crumbling down causing mountain slides coupled with angry rivers and on the other front we have the rising sea levels(which is getting worst by the day).

Communities are being sandwiched in between by land slides and rising sea levels slowly creeping on us.

As others have pointed out we are even smaller than most states in the US. WE ARE LOSING OUR LAND. Thats why we keep planting trees.

Edit. Since ive read along this post a lot of people have been asking who would provide seedlings. Where do we find land to plant. Might as well answer what i can in here.

So, where do we get the seedlings? The answer is Private corporations. they are required by law or at least a local ordinance in my city to provide reforestation activities every year. In our case, we have boatload of plants in my city. (1 power plant, a chemical plant, 3 cement factories, a huge coconut oil plantation, etc) they provide the seedlings and we provide the manpower. Its a WIN-WIN.

Where do we find land?. Yeahh. About that. In our case, around 60% of the tree planting activities organize revolves around planting MANGROVE trees. We plant them on shallow beaches. They dont need that much maintenance to keep them alive as long you plant them clustered behind a healthy adult mangrove tree. id say 3 out of 5 will make it to adulthood (keep them away from the waves while they grow the roots to seep fresh water. ). For the rest of the 40% we plant them on former river pathways, along newly constructed roads ( replace what was displaced by the road construction ). Damn, you can even plant on my backyard. Theres not enough space for trees man.

I want to plant trees! Where can I plant them without having the city removing them again? How do I make sure they are not on private property? Are there organizations who help with planting trees? (The bureaucratic questions, not the actual planting!) Help!

This articles math hurts my head unless I'm a complete idiot.

According to the article, 5000 student graduate every year. They must plant at least 10 trees to graduate. According to them that is 172 million trees a year.. however that would require 34,400, trees to be planted instead.. by each person, not 10.

What am I missing?
