Every time I see a pic of this temple I imagine the first scrape of the first tool used on the rock. Blows my mind.

There is an interesting story behind this temple.

The king of this kingdom got horribly sick, and no medicine was working. There was little hope that he would survive. So, his wife(Queen) took an oath infront of the god, that if her husband is cured, she will make a temple for that god, and she will not eat anything until the Shikara(top most part of the roof) of the temple is seen.(It is generally the last part to be constructed so basically she means that she won't eat untill entire temple is ready).

A few days later the king's sickness got cured surprisingly and he learned about the Queen's oath. Now, that was an impossible-oath as in those eras it usually took decades to construct a temple and the Shikara can only be made and kept on the top once the entire structure is ready. The queen can't survive that long without eating food, and the king and everyone was unable to convince the queen to eat.

So, the King was in a great dilemma. He asked his engineers to find a solution for this problem, and the news spread across the kingdom. One person came and said he would be able to make the Shikara within a week. No one thought it was possible, so he explained that he will go to the top of a nearby mountain, and construct the Shikara first, and then carve the entire temple from there.

So, this entire temple was constructed from TOP to BOTTOM! One of the rarest buildings in history to be constructed that way. Even today, buildings are generally constructed from bottom to top. The temple is named after the Queen.
