The architects of this fire station actually gave a presentation at my university and talked about this. Nice seeing it on reddit.
Edit: For anyone wondering: The architecture office is called "bergmeisterwolf". Their presentation wasn't about this building in particular but they talked about it for maybe 10 minutes. This was already about a year ago but what I remember is that they wanted to create something which stands in a context to the place it is located and also should be integrated in its natural surrounding rather than appear out of place.
