Not that complex, there using Dragon ball Z rules. Future trunks going back in time and warning the z fighters about the androids didn't do anything for his timeline. His timeline was Fucked up ether way. By going back in time all it did was create a new timeline where none of the z fighters were killed by the androids
IMO they explain it best when they talk about why they can't just kill Thanos as a baby. If you go back to the past, it automatically creates a branching timeline, so killing baby Thanos wouldn't change anything because it isn't THEIR Thanos.
Therefore, Cap lived out the rest of his life with Peggy in an alternate timeline, and returned to the main timeline when he was an old man.
