i am a professional Magician and i used to have places try to do this to me all the time, i was like what exposure, to 30 drunk people who wont remember if they liked seeing me and who will probably use my business card as a coaster.
I know of a jazz cafe/bar in Havana that basically has this deal: they invite a musician and tell him to call a couple of his friend musicians and they can jam absolutely whatever they want, and the bar gives them free food and drinks for the evening in exchange.
I attended twice, and the gigs were super-chill, and you could see the folks on stage just having fun and enjoying themselves.

“Must be able to draw a significant crowd. We’ll give you drink tickets.”
