Just learned my grandpa’s 1948 senior class took a trip to Washington DC. A restaurant refused to seat the black student in the class. Grandpa, who was class president, said, “Fine. We’ll leave if she’s not welcome.” The entire group off 55 left.

My grandfather had a similar situation back in the day. He was a boyscout troop leader for some time, who were all white boys. A black boy joined his troop, to the chagrin of the white families. The other parents refused to let this stand and threatened to pull their children out if he didn't ban the newcomer.

It was just him and that black kid in the troop alone for a while after that.
