Russian president Vladimir Putin scored at least eight goals in a televised exhibition game but ended with a faceplant in the rink while waving to crowds.

Footage captures the 66-year-old leader hit the red carpet that laid on the ice during a post-game victory lap and tumbles on the ice, falling flat on his face in front of the spectators.

With the help of a teammate, he made a quick recovery and continue his way around the stadium.

Putin, as he has the past few years, played with the 'Legends' team alongside Russian hockey stars including Hall of Famers Slava Fetisov and Pavel Bure.

He played a centre forward position in his traditional No. 11 shirt.

They faced off against a team of Russian politicians and business executives such as billionaire Vladimir Pontanin and tycoon Gennady Timchenko.

The official Kremlin release shows Putin scored 10 times in a 14-7 victory, although both Reuters reported that he fired eight goals during the match.

According to the Washington Post, this is not the first time Putin has fallen on ice.

If this had killed him it would have been the strangest end to a dictatorship I can imagine.
