Marvel took some big risks on the stars of their franchises. Robert Downey Junior was probably the last person anyone pictured as a superhero. Chris Pratt was a goofy sitcom actor. Chris Evans was already a superhero actor, but he was typecast as more of the Johnny Storm type. Hemsworth had some up-and-coming juice but the general public had never heard of him or Tom Hiddleston.
Recently they’ve gotten so big and bankable that they can snag more obvious choices (like Rudd as Ant-Man, Cumberbatch as Strange, Boseman as Black Panther, and Larson as Captain Marvel), but their bold choices early on put them in that position.

It aged pretty well, actually. Before Thor, no one knew who Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston were. Marvel made them household names.
