Events were at their peak in generation 4. They were at their lowest in generation 3 and before. Everyone forgets that a lot of events back in the day were unobtainable for most. Forget Gamestop and other retail stores being a pain. You have to go to Japan or be one of the first few hundred kids in line at toys r us to get mew pre-generation 4, be at the right place for deoxys and buy both English and Japan colosseum disks for Jirachi and Celebi.
I remember getting an event Celebi back in 4th then transferring it over to 5th gen to get Zoroa in Castalia city in white. I remember being the coolest kid at school because not only could I get you a larvesta (I was the first person to get that far) but I could get you the only legendary that evolved (I was like 10 and thought Zoroark was legendary).
the coolest event in my opinion were the Sinnoh ones for Shaymin, Darkrai, and Arceus. Nothing cooler than going to a known place in-game (and out if you had to pop by the local gamestop), unlocking cutscenes with an item (especially the egg one with arceus!), and having to actually catch the pokémon. the sense of accomplishment and entertainment was way higher imo
