You want to get people into debt when they're young, that way you can own their ass as they move into their prime earning years. And if they default or go bankrupt - even better, they will be paying much higher interest rates on any future borrowing. You will earn probably another 4 points on any loan made to some poor kid who at the age of 19 though $60k in loans was no big deal. Bring back bankruptcy for student loans and you'll see things change overnight. No need to totally publicly fund education, although it's likely not a terrible idea. PRICES need to come down, funding doesn't need to come up!
Why are prices so high for college classes? Students are paying upwards of $1000/credit in private colleges for bullshit classes that cost likely a few thousand dollars to offer. Prices are absurd for higher education today. What effectively is the mark-up or profit margin on an art history degree that the offering institution realizes?
