Most Irish people would date independence as officially starting with the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921 - leaving the Commonwealth and declaring the Republic was more the formal aspect of the de facto status.

This title is a bit misleading. As it's been pointed out here already, Ireland was independent long before the declaration of the Republic in 1949, this day merely marks the final severance of any links to the Commonwealth.

The confusion of having several different years/milestones of independence (1916, 1922, 1937, 1949) is why everyone just sticks to Paddy's Day.
