I visited Buchenwald back in 1991 and I swear you could still smell the atrocities. I'm curious if that's changed.

My great-grandfather was taken to Buchenwald in 1938 for a month, then the entire family fled to Holland only have the Nazis invade and send them to Bergen-Belsen.

They were then put on one of the "Lost Transports" as the allies were closing in. The train fortunately never made it to Auschwitz and they were liberated by Soviet soldiers in a tiny village in Eastern Germany (Tröbitz).

My grandmother and her entire immediate family survived the Holocaust, but her father died from typhus 6 weeks after they were liberated.

My grandmother wrote a book about her experience that has been translated into four languages, and gives talks as well, if anyone happens to want to learn more.
