TIL that Steve Martin's wedding came as a surprise to his guests. The roughly 75 star-studded attendees (including the likes of Tom Hanks, Diane Keaton, Eugene Levy, and Carl Reiner) said that he had invited them to his house just for a "party." To their shock, upon their arrival his wedding began.

At his children’s behest, my buddy went to a Halloween party at his ex-wife’s place. They were still young and Halloween was still a big deal, so he grudgingly showed up dressed like Errol Flynn, swashbuckling hat and all. He hated her, but he loved his kids. Now that I have a kid (but still married thank God) I totally get it.

The ex is very well off and there was a shuttle to take them from the road to their front gate where everyone else was waiting in the rain to be let on the property. My buddy is talking to his kids and some town crier type of dude steps up on a rock by the front gate and says “the lady of the manor approaches!”

With the whole crowd dressed up in various Halloween costumes, she comes over the hill on a horse, dressed in a wedding dress. No one thought anything of it until her boyfriend followed on a horse behind her in a full tux.

It was a surprise Halloween wedding and not even her own children knew about it. My buddy high-tailed it out of there as soon he figured it out. It was her fourth marriage.

My aunt and uncle did this too. Had everyone over for a barbecue, went inside, came out in nicer clothes (still casual but slightly dressier), reintroduced a random friend as “Pastor” and boom- wedding. It was great.

Edit: for the comments about travel, those who may have missed, etc.

They lived on a lake and often had barbecues on weekends. On this particular one my Grandmother (God rest her) was coming to town from about 3 hours away so the rest of uncle’s siblings came as well. There are a LOT of siblings and everyone made an effort to come together. Idk if there was an extra effort behind the scenes (Are you SURE you can’t come...?) or not but as I recall all of the sibs were there. We were quite surprised and very happy. They’d been together for 5-6 years and had never even mentioned marriage.

It ended up being about 30 people, mostly family, a few friends and neighbors, barbecue/potluck, lots of beer and a great day, well into the night.
