The history of knocking is actually pretty interesting! The first recorded instance of knocking is from Medieval French poet Màrc Notteman’s early 17th century poem, “Quand Papa Rentre à la Maison”, a line therein refers to a special knock that his father used to assure his family that it was him at the door and not some stranger or someone they didn’t feel like dealing with. Obviously there’s been instances of knocking before then, but it was just such a casual and accepted action that it wasn’t really noteworthy. Once I tried to teach my dad a special knock but he was too drunk to care and beat me with some rusty jumper cables until his arms got tired and then he went back inside.

“I’m respecting your privacy by knocking, but asserting my authority as your parent by coming in anyways.”
