I'm hostile to Islam specifically because Islam is hostile to Muslims.

I try explaining it to people like this:

"Imagine they would be in a crazy cult, like heavens gate or solar temple. The people are the victims, for their sake the organisation has to be abolished"

Now replace crazy cult with any religion since for me, it's the same thing.

the problem is that so many religious people identify with their ideas, aka an attack on the idea is the same as an attack on them physically. it literally does not compute for them that someone could possibly hope for their well being while simultaneously shredding their mystical mumbo jumbo fairytale worldview

so dawkins is their arch nemesis. barely a step above satan, if even

edit: i didn't expect this comment to blow up right before i left for work.

couple points:

i really don't care what people choose to believe

i don't come to /r/atheism to debate the existence of supernatural beings

i don't debate such things IRL either. see point 1. believe me, i've heard it all before, and i've made up my own mind (which i AM capable of changing, if given new information)

the exception to all this is when those beliefs start influencing public policy which affects everyone, including but not limited to abortion rights, equality rights, scientific research, climate change, education, etc. this is my gripe with religion. it can't just fucking keep to itself.

you're completely free to believe what you want, just like i'm free to call those beliefs stupid. no, i don't see any reason why i should "respect" your devotion to some bronze age mythology. excuse me, but fuck that shit.

edit 2: thanks for the gold-- it's nice to know that someone appreciates a comment that if i said it out loud here in the bible belt, would probably earn me some slashed tires. or worse.
