Reading to animals or stuffed animals can be very helpful for nervous readers or kids with speech problems. Really takes away their apprehension. Have your kids read to a dog sometime
When I was a kid I was like 90% sure the only reason my cat couldn't read or write was because nobody had taught him. I made his education my mission for like 3 whole nights before he lost his patience.

My niece reads books to her guinea pig before bed because that was what I did for her when she was little... kids are the best
