In Dartmouth, Devon, there is a place called Dead Man's Cross. Long ago, criminals were hanged there. Now, residents are spooked by this unintentional shadow, created by the nearby road sign.
My Grandpa grew up in North Carolina. He remembers walking into town as a kid and seeing a man hanging from a lamp post. He was told that the guy was from out of town and had been accused of raping a farmer's daughter, so they hung the guy where everyone could see as a warning.
