As a teacher this is spot on... Ive learned to say "I dont argue with children." That shuts them down real quick.
Edit: So this is catching a lot of flack, probably from non-educators. I'm a young coach / science teacher (27 years old). Because of this students think they can get away with anything. No, I don't belittle children. No, this isn't something I say when a student has a valid argument or a reason to be upset. I use this phrase when the conversation has turned into a cyclical shit show. It is a way to get them to realize the reality of the situation... I'm their teacher, I'm not their dad that they can chip-away at untill they get what they want. There is a line they can not cross.
I let my students and athletes get away with a lot more than I should. I try to be understanding and empathetic. I genuinely care about them and understand how hard /awkward being 13-14 is.
Sometimes the little extra leash I give them they try to strangle me with. When this happens you need to lay down the law of the land. You're the adult, and to put it bluntly, you're in charge of them - because guess what... They're children!
