Searchers are gathering in Benbow this morning to look for Leia and Caroline Carrico. Searchers from the Mendocino Sheriff’s office are “supposed to bring a dog…,” the mother of the two girls, Misty Carrico said this morning.

The two girls, Caroline Rose age five and Leia age eight went missing yesterday around 2:30 p.m. Family and neighbors looked for the two young girls until late afternoon then law enforcement took over with trained searchers.

Heavy rain fell last night in Southern Humboldt County adding to concerns for the two sisters. Caroline is and Leia (Princess Leia, she will correct you if you pronounce her name wrong) were last seen near their home on Twin Trees Road south of Benbow.

The oldest was last seen wearing purple rain boots and gray long sleeved shirt with a hood. The youngest was last seen wearing a maroon colored rain jacket with white horses on it as well as blue jeans and pink rain boots.

We have a reporter on the way to the searchers and we’ll be updating from the scene throughout the day.

UPDATE 9:43 a.m.: The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office just sent out a plea for people to stay away from the search area. They tweeted, “Several trained search crews are on scene. Please stay clear of the search area unless given permission by HCSO deputies.”

UPDATE 10:35 a.m.: A helicopter has joined the search according to multiple people in the area.

When my daughter was 5 or so she was playing in our fenced back yard while my wife was doing housework. I was at the gym. Somehow she figured out how to reach the fence gate latch and opened it up. When I pulled in the driveway my wife was frantically running up the street. I thought our dog got out. She yelled that it was our daughter was missing. The panic that set over me was the most intense feeling I've ever had in my life. I started frantically searching the neighborhood, asking the kids playing if they've seen a little girl. By that time the sherriff was there, they got her scent and started searching as well as a few of our neighbors. I was besides myself with fear. Ready to kick down random doors, completely irrational. Just as I was continuing my search I see this 14 year old girl walking back towards my house with my daughter from the park and lake in the middle of the neighborhood. The girl had seen my daughter walking a lone to the park, she thought it was weird so instead of just ignoring her she stayed with my daughter to watch over her. That random girl could have saved my daughters life for all I know.

Anytime I see a story like this I think of that 1 hour that my daughter was gone. I don't know how one could cope with such a thing over any duration, knowing that every minute they are gone reduces the chances that you will find them. I'm hoping for a positive outcome, because they do happen. Those poor little girls.

Edit: Thank you rescue workers the girls were found safe!
