When I was in college, about 3 years ago, the books weren't always the culprit. It was usually the damn access codes to see certain assignments or even the ability to turn things in.
Fun thing I learned from authoring a chapter for one of these 150$ textbooks.
The authors aren’t seeing money from this except for maybe the main editor.
I was first author for a chapter and in return I got an E copy of the book, a discount (like 10%) on the print book if I wanted it and discounted (again, not by a lot) online access to journals from the same publisher.

My roommate is about to photo copy a text book so he doesn’t have to buy one for that price lol
