Most people in my office spend most of their time pretending they're working.

This happened to my cousin. She left school halfway through her final year because she was offered a good job (hard to come by in her area of the country). She was super efficient and could get through all the work the lady she replaced did in an entire day before lunch. So she went to her manager and asked if she could help out elsewhere, her reward was being sacked “because we don’t really have enough work to justify keeping you”.

Worked at a factory for a while in my early 20s. Do your work fast and efficient and sit down for a bit? You get snitched on and bitched out by the shift manager. Spend the entire shift on your feet walking around mindlessly or chatting with people while doing little work? Perfect employee.

There was a period of a few days when we were working in pairs on a section of the factory managing the machines. You have to check the material going into the boxes to make sure it's good, and then pack them up, scan, stack and initial the box. I finally got fed up because I knew I was doing more work than the girl I was paired with. I decided to count the the boxes throughout the shift that had my initials vs hers. It's been a few years so I don't remember the exact numbers, but I do remember that I did somewhere between 100 and 110, and she did less than 10. She was also paid more than me because I was still on the probationary period. I brought that up and got reprimanded. Left after 8 months.
