I read somewhere that your internal voice is based on the way that your parents talk to you and about you.
At 16, kids mess up and I'm not pretending that I've never raised my voice to my own child but we've discussed the problem calmly later and we've tried to fix it. Yelling at a kid until they cry helps no-one. This is opportunity to teach the child how to deal with problems in life and deal with intra-personal behaviours. Edit: took out personal information
I still remember what the room looked like, how hard I was crying on the day bed and then it was like a switch turned off and I had no feelings left for my verbally abusive husband. Thanks for posting that - you put into words exactly what happened

My parents would yell at me until I cried and then make me apologize for making them sad with my tears. I do not like them.
