I lived in France for a year and didn't speak a lot of French. One time on a bus I tried to offer my seat to an old man but couldn't exactly say, "Excuse me sir, would you like to take my seat?" in French. So I mumbled something like, "sit here please" in my broken French. But he didn't quite get it so a random girl on the bus translated for me. When she told him what I meant, he looked at her and asked why I didn't say that in the first place, so she told him that I don't speak French very well. Then he looked at me and said, "If you don't speak French get the fuck out of my country". I know he said this cause the girl and another guy standing there got really mad at the old man instead and then told me what he said.
On the bright side, after that happened I offered the girl my seat and she accepted and then I got her number and we hung out later. So it all worked out I guess...

Compassion is always the best quality a person can have. Good on you, OP. You made someone's day on the bus a lot better with that simple gesture.

I tried and insisted, but because I was female the elderly gentleman wouldn't take my seat :(
