Another thing that helps me proofread is reading the document sentence by sentence, but backwards. So you start with the last sentence, read it, then go to the next to last, etc. This has been the best thing I've found for making sure absolutely no grammatical mistakes make it through. It's easy for your eyes to glaze over when you're reading a document for the fifth time. This method isolates each individual sentence so you're looking at it with fresh eyes.

If you do the flat tire hack, take a few pictures from different angles- that way, if you end up sending that excuse to the same person (likely a boss) then you won't get caught using the exact same picture.
