I once had a big fresnel lens (about a square meter) that could melt steel with sunlight. The focus was only about a meter away though.

He's a true scientist because of the way he phrases it. It doesn't seem to be working and he says he's not dead yet. Notice that he says nothing definitive and is only describing what he's experiencing at that moment.
