California Attorney General Xavier Becerra had strong words for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos in his fight for student debt relief."We have seen her turn back the clock and we have seen her turn her back on our students," said Becerra.Becerra announced California and seven other states will support a lawsuit against DeVos, alleging students are being denied debt relief after being defrauded by Corinthian Colleges."Companies loaded up these students with debts they knew never could be repaid with the ultimate goal of driving large bonuses to executives and profits to shareholders," said Seth Fotman, from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The now-defunct, for-profit Corinthian Colleges and its subsidiaries left thousands of students with major debt. The Obama administration reached a deal to provide full relief, but under the new administration, only partial refunds are being granted."You borrow $40,000, which isn't uncommon, they're telling you maybe you'll get $4,000 of that $40,000 relieved," said Becerra.Becerra said more than 50,000 students are still waiting on their claims. He said more than 8,000 claims were denied between December and May.The U.S. Department of Education did not respond to a request for comment."We need good rules and we need good enforcement of those rules," said Becerra. "Unfortunately this administration doesn't seem interested in either of those things."

If you're thinking about going back to school, avoid ANYTHING that advertises during daytime talk shows or Adult Swim.

Paralegal, professional, techincal, culinary, arts - doesn't matter. 99% of the schools advertising on TV are scams. Community colleges or state universities are your safest bets in terms of cost, credit transfers, and degrees.

Edit: John Oliver did a pretty good episode on just how predatory and dishonest these for-profit schools are.

If you’re reading this and attended one of CC schools. Ask for your original paperwork. There is a chance they’ve lost it and might have forged your documents.

I attended WyoTech from 2011 to 2012 in Pennsylvania. Which is from the years when they were suppose to forgive 40% of your loans if you had a Genesis loan, which is what I and lots of others had. They never forgave my loans and when I asked why, I was told that my loan didn’t qualify because I never had a genesis loan. I asked for approved copies of my original paperwork. When they sent it to me, they sent me paperwork that said I lived in a house that I didn’t move into until 2014. I saved every email, picture, everything I had and hired a lawyer. They caved and forgave ALL of my private loans.

I know I was very lucky in my situation but if they forged my paperwork to keep me paying, I’m sure they’ve done that to others as well.

Corinthian Colleges really fooled a lot of folks into thinking they had nearly guaranteed jobs waiting for them at the end. $40,000 in federal debt and many are reporting relief of only $4000. Caveat emptor. smh
