They look like June beetles. I love June beetles, I had one land on my shoulder while I was working at an ice cream shop once and it just sat their and I called him my shift buddy until he flew away.
Whilst it's true I've never been bitten by one they can still cause harm. They have little pinchy legs that hurt when they grab onto your skin. They are also as hard as little rocks and will take your eye out if one goes all kamikaze on you... But yes they won't eat you.

Is that what Christmas beetles look like in Australia? In South Africa they're an ugly brown colour.
