My group just finished up a year and a half long arc that left them a good deal of downtime and spending money as their reward (also pardons for past crimes, but that is another story altogether) The rogue of the group is a great cook, has expertise in the tools, and wanted to open a restaurant and casino in a town along a caravan route. Being an ex-assassin, he also had some additional requests that wouldn't show up on the regular floor plan, namely several weapon caches throughout the building and a bunker/trap maze/safe room underneath only accessible through the building's regular safe.
Enter invisible ink. Now he has the plans, and I don't have to make 2 copies.
I can think of a few other uses in-game for this. For instance, what if they found an old tome that seemed fairly ordinary, but if/when a magic user rolls a successful arcana check, it reveals a powerful new spell or clue to the current campaign? Oh man ... I'm inspired. From one DM to another, thanks for this!
