When he was a POW he had the chance to leave early but refused to leave until everyone else got to leave. Since he did that he, along with everyone else, received severe torture which included beatings 2 or 3 times a week. What he went through was absolutely awful but so inspirational. He was a legend.

Edit: I just want to add that the reason he had a chance to leave early was because his dad was higher up in the military. The vietminas wanted to release him so they could look merciful for propaganda purposes.
