I'm sorry for your loss, OP.

Cat's have this innate sense of things. I had a terrorist cat growing up that was nothing but mean all the time.

Unless you were sick in bed.

He knew what this meant. He would call a truce and come lay at your feet for as many days as it took to recover.

Then he was back to his mean old self again. Loved that bastard.

I had an old bitchy barn cat for about fifteen years. She used to live to fuck with my doggo, who was rightly terrified of the tiny fluffy murder cat. The only time she ever stood up for herself though was when the cat would attempt to steal the dog bed. My anxious doggo would lose her shit and chase her around barking bloody murder.

That is until the old cat got sick. She was sick and tired and old, the vet gave us some pain meds and.told us to let her live it out happy and comfortable. So we did. The day I knew for sure she was dying I came home from work and the cat was curled up asleep in the middle of the dog bed, and my dog was laid next to her on the floor. I picked the kitty up and loved her, let her pur on my chest and put her back to sleep on the bed. My normally doofy excited boxer dog sat vigil for hours with her. She never moved. The kitty was gone that night.

My doggo slept there for a week, next to her empty bed. Animals know, and I'm certain they grieve too.
